This year my wife and I have had a lot of experience with doctors as I had coronary artery bypass surgery and Linda suffered two falls. This experience has shown us at least some of the reason why medical expenses are so high, and that reason is bureaucracy. And, for some reason, the doctors do not share. Linda is having surgery on her back to repair a broken vertebra tomorrow. Her primary care physian (PCP) referred her to a surgeon. The surgeon sent her back to the PCP for approval that Linda is fit for surgery. After a few weeks and two visits, a detailed discussion of what the surgeon was going to do (doctors apparently don't talk to each other) the PCP did blood tests, an EKG, and X-Rays, etc. She then went back to the surgeon with the PCP's approval. The surgeon then sent her to Hospital for pre-admittal where they check the insurance and collect their fee. THey also repeat all of the tests the PCP did. Clearly this system could be improved. It is doubtful to me that any of the Presidential candidates could improve this bureaucracy, no matter what they say. The government, and particularly the Fedral governemnt, can only successfully create larger and less efficient bureaucracies.
