In the long run, the world needs an energy source like nuclear fusion. It is potentially a clean power source that could power the world for hundreds of centuries. But, since I was in college back in the 1950's it has been 20 years away. That doesn't mean it will never be successful. But, it does require a lot of development money, and private enterprise cannot supply the funding needed with the reward so far in the future. So, government development is needed.
