I recently saw a city councilman from South Los Angeles talking about plans to prevent the establishment of any more fast food restaurants. It seems that there are a lot of obese people in South Los Angeles, and the city government feels compelled to save the people from themselves. When it was pointed out to the councilman that fast food restaurants have low calorie items on there menu that people could choose, he mumbled that the lure of big Macs is too great, so they bypass the lower calorie food. I'm pretty sure the city government is controlled by Democrats. Democrats know what is best for the people, and wants to take care of them. They typically regard the people as too stupid to make rational decisions for themselves. If the city government gets their way, that should increase the value of the existing fast food restaurants. The government must not realize that if there was a market for more upscale restaurants in South Los Angeles capitalists would build them.

The Democrats worry about the poor people in the US, which is probably the first country in the history of the world in which the problem for the poor is not hunger, but rather is obesity. So, instead of figuring out how to get more calories to the poor, they need to figure out how to get the poor to eat less.
