Previously I discussed how building big football stadia is probably not economically profitable for communities. There is one group of people, who are often major factors in local politics, who do profit, and that is real estate developers. The Superbowl this year is being played in Glendale, Arizona. That community started building the new stadium five years ago. Since then the population has increased by a factor of five, up to 250,000. No doubt many real estate developers made a fortune. The football stadium cost $455 million, but the infrastructure to support all of those people surely cost much more. I suspect that the real estate developers would argue that all of those people had to live somewhere. I suppose it is a case of "build it and they will come."
