Science is now being used to direct public policy, giving rise to more incentive for fraud in science. On May 15 the Bush Administration has to make a decision on whether or not to declare the polar bear an endangered species due to increases in atmospheric CO2 contributing to global warming that melts the sea ice in the arctic that (it is argued, incorrectly) that polar bears need to survive. Environmentalists want this action so they can totally stop economic progress in the USA. They can use this to require that any new project in the USA not generate CO2. Thus no new coal fired or gas fired power plants could be built. (Solar and wind power plants require some sort of backup power generation capability, so this would pretty well stop economic growth in the uS.) Here is a talk by a Professor from Tasmania about how fraud shows up in science as science begins to be used to establish public policy.
