Labor unions have played a major role in destruction of American Industry, particularly in steel and auto manufacturing. They also damaged the rail industry, losing out to trucking since outsourcing overseas was not feasible. Unionized teachers have harmed public education in much the same way that industrial unions harmed steel and autos, mainly through bureaucracy and ridiculous work rules. Now unionized government workers are threatening the fiscal soundness of cities and states, and even the Federal Government. The salaries of public employees are now much higher than private employees, with pension benefits that dwarf those of private industry. In some places firemen and policemen retire while still young on pensions that are much more than their salary while working; in many places retirement pay is over $100.000 per year from jobs that paid half that. Here is something on this from Mickey Kaus.
