For some reason, people think there have always been a significant number of Mexicans in the American Southwest. There were some, but in 1900 the percentage of the population of America that was Hispanic was quite low, less than 1%. The 1920 census identified about 1 million Hispanics in the USA. Now there at at least 20 million illegal immigrant Hispanics in the USA. Texas has alone over 8 million Hispanics. Unlike many previous immigrant groups, the Hispanic are not assimilating very well.
