Obama says we could save 4% of the oil we use in the US if we properly inflated automobile tires. It is true that properly inflating tires does save energy, but this is still a ridiculous statement that indicates Obama must not have any engineers on his staff. First of all only about half of the oil consumed is used for transportation. But, more important, most automobiles on the road have tires inflated, if not at the recommended level, certainly at a level that does not reduce mileage by 4%. Politicians come up with some odd things as they shot from the hip. I have seen estimates that perhaps 15% of cars on the road have somewhat underinflated tires, probably not at a level that reduces mileage by 4%. Often when a tire is severely underinflated, it is rapidly on the way to being flat, so the car is not driven very far in that condition. Putting all of these worst case numbers together along with daily consumption of 390 million gallons of gasoline per day produces a possible savings of 30,000 barrrels per day. Not insignificant, but difficult to achieve because tires will develop leaks and it takes some time for the leak to be detected. Systems do not operate in an optimum fashion at all times, and they never will. Obama's argument is an example of sophism.
